The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is making all the headlines in its special edition avatars smashing records at one of the most prestigious races in the world.
Hyundai Ioniq 5 N TA (Time Attack) Spec takes the win in the exhibition class at the iconic Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) on June 23. In this category, the special edition of the performance EV was able to complete the race in an impressive 9 mins 30 secs.
This is the new record for the Electric Modified and Production SUV/Crossover categories. In total, three Ioniq 5 EVs participated in this race – two Ioniq 5 TA (Time Attack) Specs and one production Ioniq 5. Hence, this was a testament to how easily the production spec can be tuned to offer exhilarating performance.

As per the information in the official press release, all three models conquered the challenging 12.42-mile (20 km) course that ascends over 4,700 feet (1,438 meters) to the summit of Pikes Peak. This included 156 turns, unpredictable weather and high-altitude conditions that can affect both drivers and vehicles. Hyundai World Rally driver Dani Sordo was behind the wheel of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N TA Spec which clinched the exhibition class.
Randy Pobst drove the other Ioniq 5 TA Spec model completing the race in 09:55.551. To enhance the capabilities of the stock model, the Ioniq 5 N TA Spec had new shock absorbers, motorsport-spec brakes and slick tires. But it still carried most components from the regular version. PPIHC rookie Ron Zaras took the production-spec Ioniq 5 N to dispatch the race in a remarkable 10:49.267.
Speaking on this momentous occasion, Vice President and Head of N Brand and Motorsport at Hyundai Motor Company, Till Wartenberg said, “We are absolutely thrilled to set a new record at Pikes Peak and our performance overall. Going forward, we plan to continue leveraging exciting motorsports activities such as Pikes Peak to showcase the superior performance of our mass-produced vehicles and continue to develop technology that not only meets customer needs but exceeds their expectations.”
Hyundai Motor Company plans to continue exploring more possibilities with its production models. The Ioniq 5 N, for instance, already has hardcore performance iterations including the IONIQ 5 N eN1 Cup Car and IONIQ 5 N TA Spec. The Korean auto giant will continue to launch special specification models to broaden the horizon of EV motorsports.

It fascinates me beyond measure to see what the Korean auto giant has been able to achieve in the domain of racing EVs. What is even more impressive is just how easily it can tune the power electronics of production cars to transform them into fire-breathing monsters. The aforementioned avatars of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N are prime examples of that.
Furthermore, these new editions are not just some minutely enhanced versions of the production EV. Rather, they are full-fledged performance EVs which are among the fastest in the world. In essence, the N Division of Hyundai has successfully been able to adapt to the changing environments. I am excited to see what Hyundai does next in this regard.
