The widely successful mass market EV from the Korean auto giant has spawned some truly hardcore performance avatars for varied applications.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has become a donor model for some hardcore performance beasts across various applications. The three versions of the Ioniq 5 are – Ioniq 5 N, Ioniq 5 N eN1 Cup Car and Ioniq 5 N TA (Time Attack) Spec. The former is available to the masses but the latter two will be reserved for EV racing and special occasions. For instance, the Ioniq 5 N TA Spec recently won the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) in the exhibition class category.

This next avatar of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 was specifically crafted for the Hyundai N Festival Motorsports event. It marked the brand’s foray into EV racing back in April this year. This iteration of the prominent EV is not meant for public roads. Interestingly, it utilizes the stock E-GMP architecture and the same power electronics. It allows the eN1 Cup Car to leverage this platform’s robust thermal management system and strong regenerative braking system. The top aspects of this special edition model are as follows:

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N TA Spec

Finally, the regular Hyundai Ioniq 5 even spawned the mighty impressive Ioniq 5 N TA (Time Attack) Spec. This is the version which recently participated in the Pikes Peak Race. It won the Exhibition Class by smashing the record in the Electric Modified and Production SUV/Crossover category. Hyundai World Rally driver Dani Sordo was behind the wheel of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N TA Spec which clinched the exhibition class. The final race time was a lightning fast 9 mins 30 seconds.

Pikes Peak Climb is an immensely revered event. The challenging 12.42-mile (20 km) course ascends over 4,700 feet (1,438 meters) to the summit of Pikes Peak. This includes 156 turns, unpredictable weather and high-altitude conditions that can affect both drivers and vehicles. To tackle this track, the EV had new shock absorbers, motorsport-spec brakes and slick tires.

Learn Electric Cars Says

The fact that a single EV and its platform can be customized so extensively without major efforts showcases the flexibility of electric powertrains. While it takes tons of mechanical modifications and addition of components to alter the nature of a regular ICE car, it is quite the opposite with electric cars. These three distinct versions of the Ioniq 5 are the perfect examples to prove this point.

As EVs begin to become more popular and mainstream, at least in the major automotive markets around the globe, it will be interesting to explore their unique tangents. EV Racing Motorsport is one such category. The inherent instant torque of EVs lends itself well for those kinds of environments.
