BYD is already the second-largest EV battery manufacturer in the world behind CATL
BYD has announced to launch its next-gen Blade Battery for electric cars next year (2025). BYD is the second largest EV maker on the planet behind Tesla. With in-house EV battery development and production capabilities, it has been able to flood the Chinese and many international markets with ultra-affordable EVs. Not just that, many other legacy car marques also use its Blade Battery in their EVs including Ford, Tesla, Hyundai, Kia and Toyota.

Next-Gen BYD Blade Battery Announced
The biggest advantage of these batteries is their LFP (Lithium-Iron-Phosphate) chemistry. This cell construction is cheaper than traditional Lithium-ion batteries, which is the most common chemistry today’s EVs use. As a result, the prices of these vehicles are much higher than their ICE counterparts. As we know, a high initial price is a huge hurdle preventing the mass adoption of electric vehicles.
Just for reference, using the low-cost LFP Blade Battery, BYD sells the Seagull in China at under $10,000 (69,800 yuan). Despite being a compact and affordable vehicle, it boasts a CLTC range of a decent 252 miles (405 km). That is more than enough for a daily commute making it ideal for city dwellers. That is why it is the top-selling EV in China. Now BYD claims that the next-gen Blade Battery will be even more compact, safe and efficient.
BYD’s Central Asia MD, Cao Shuang said in an interview with Chinese media CGTN at COP29 that the new batteries will launch next year. He remarked, “I think in the coming years, 2025, BYD will introduce the new generation of our remarkable blade battery.” He further commented that the new batteries promise to “enhance the driving distance of our vehicles.” I must admit, it is exciting to see how these batteries will affect the mass adoption of EVs.
