i7 Becomes The First BMW EV To Test Solid-State Batteries On Public Roads

It seems like the solid-state battery technology is inching closer to mass production as more and more carmakers invest time and resources in R&D

BMW has commenced the testing of the solid-state batteries (SSBs) on public roads via the prototypes on the i7. The luxury electric sedan has been spotted testing with this battery near Munich. In the last few years, we have seen many legacy and new-age car marques conducting research in this space, mostly with collaborations with battery giants. While we keep witnessing some new EV battery tech every other week, the SSB seems to be the recurring theme.

The current breed of EVs from the Bavarian auto maker deploys Gen5 prismatic cells. Interestingly, that is exactly what the solid-state battery also contains. Both of these have the same form factor, albeit the electrolyte used in the new SSB is a solid sulfide-based electrolyte. Furthermore, BMW will come up with its Gen6 batteries in its upcoming Neue Klasse EVs.

These will boast cylindrical cells. What is worth noting is that we will even see yet another generation of EV batteries from BMW thereafter, and before the solid-state batteries go into mass production. Clearly, BMW is not in any hurry to bring it to the masses. Another reason for this is the fact that BMW claims its Gen6 batteries promise 30% faster charging, 30% more range, 60% carbon reduction in the production process and 50% cost reduction per pack.

BMW’s Vice President of Battery Cell and Cell Module, Martin Schuster, said, “Our BMW i7 ASSB test vehicle on the road is a perfect example of the BMW Group’s technology-open mindset. We are continuously advancing the development of new battery cell technologies and are constantly expanding our know-how with valuable partners such as Solid Power.

Solid-state batteries have been the rage in the global EV industry for a few years now. However, the lack of adequate automobile application testing means that we are still some time away from them actually becoming mass market. In any case, one can evidently notice that it is the most likely tech to make it to production amidst a sea of upcoming innovative technologies we often see. Let us keep an eye out for how things pan out going forward.
