With so many versions of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 already showcased, the XRT will be an off-roader for the mass market.

The North America-bound Hyundai Ioniq 5 XRT has officially commenced testing. Being an off-road-focused EV, the spy media captured it being driven on challenging roads. The Ioniq 5 has been immensely successful not just in the U.S. but in many international markets. In fact, it was the fourth best-selling EV in the U.S. in Q2. Hence, buyers have evidently taken a liking to it.

For various iconic races like the Pikes Peak, the Korean giant introduced a much meaner iteration of the Ioniq 5 N. Therefore, the concept of creating special-edition avatars of the Ioniq 5 for varied applications is not alien to Hyundai. Hyundai Ioniq 5 XRT Commences Testing

These images of the heavily camouflaged Hyundai Ioniq 5 XRT come to us courtesy of AutoSpy from the Hyundai-Kia Technical Center in South Korea. Even though the body is wrapped in a black covering, some design elements stick out. For instance, there are red tow hooks on the front bumper. In fact, the bumper itself appears slightly different from the regular Ioniq 5 with repositioned parking sensors. However, the most intriguing badging on the test mule is that of E-Terrain.

Other notable design changes include roof rails, off-roading tires, a unique pixel pattern on the side and front cladding, a new pixel LED light bar, etc. On the inside, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 XRT will incorporate a few more physical buttons, a new steering wheel, the ccNC infotainment display, a redesigned climate control panel and an improved connected car navigation system with OTA updates. Hence, it won’t just be a regular Ioniq 5 with a bit of accessories. In terms of the battery, it will feature the new bigger 84 kWh unit up from 77.4 kWh.

Staying with the E-Terrain tech, the electronics of the car are controlled by distributing force based on the road conditions. This takes into account the Electronic Stability Control feature of the car. Hence, power delivery is adjusted depending on use cases such as snow, sand, mud, dirt, etc. At the moment, the Genesis Electrified GV70 utilizes the E-Terrain tech. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 XRT will rival the likes of the upcoming Rivian R3X and the Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally.
