The American EV startup is taking concrete measures to reel in the fence sitters to experience EVs
Rivian has finally entered the pre-owned vehicle program and the R1T and R1S are currently available. These two electric products have been reasonably successful in the U.S. in the last few years. In fact, the R1S has recently been updated for the 2025 model year. Also, the upcoming affordable Rivian EVs (R1, R2, R3) are still some time away. Until then, the American EV giant wishes to create a buzz in the market by launching the pre-owned car program.

Pre-Owned Rivian R1T and R1S Available
At the moment, this program is valid in California and Illinois. However, it will stretch to other states very soon. Interested buyers can either buy the EV straight up or opt for financing. Not only that, if you are not satisfied with the EV, there is also the option to return it after 7 days or 500 miles. Understandably, there are not all that many models available on the website just yet.
Rivian officially said during an interaction with Auto News that it is not selling extended warranties on its pre-owned models yet. However, it is anticipated that Rivian could start offering it soon to attract a wide range of buyers. Apart from that, Edmunds Senior Analyst Ivan Drury said, “For consumers testing the waters on brands they’ve never had experience with, you want as many things as possible that inspire confidence, and these programs speak to that. There’s an entire segment of buyers that see no value in purchasing new cars because depreciation is already bad, let alone on an EV. A properly implemented certified pre-owned program benefits everybody except your competition.”
The 2025 Rivian R1S uses a colossal 149 kWh battery pack in the quad motor configuration. The total power and torque outputs stand at a jaw-dropping 1,025 hp and 1,198 lb-ft (1,624 Nm) of maximum power and torque. As per Rivian, this propels the EV from 0 to 60 mph (97 kmph) in a mere 2.6 seconds. This is even more impressive than most supercars out there. The EV tips the scales at 6,824 lbs (3,095 kg). Finally, it boasts a quarter-mile sprint time of just 10.4 seconds with a 128.2 mph (206.3 kmph) exit speed.

Having the option of an official pre-owned dealership invokes a sense of confidence among potential car buyers. For a brand that is new, such initiatives can go a long way in popularizing its products. Also, people can get the EVs at a substantially lower price point. Therefore, fence sitters can jump onto such deals even if it is on an experimental basis. In any case, we shall have to wait to see how well the customers embrace this program.
