The compact electric SUV has been on the verge of launching in North America for a while now
The Volvo EX30 has turned out to be a massive success for the Geely-owned Swedish auto giant. Volvo has been renowned for making some of the safest cars out there. After Geely acquired the biggest share in Volvo in 2010, the Swedish car marque found a base for manufacturing in China. In fact, Volvo’s luxury electric division, Polestar, also utilized that base to flood the international markets with its luxury EVs. However, after the recent tariffs from Europe and the U.S., Volvo is planning to shift a large chunk of its manufacturing to Europe in Ghent, Belgium.

Volvo Produces 100,000 EX30 EVs
The Volvo EX30 commenced deliveries in December 2023. By September 2024, Volvo has already made a whopping 100,000 units of the compact electric SUV. That is quite impressive for an electric car, especially in the current environment. Note that the EX30 is on sale in Europe for an attractive $40,200 in standard version. If customers decide to opt for the extended-range battery, the price tag reads $44,900.
Now, I have been reporting about the Volvo EX30 trying to make it to North America for the past few months. However, the astronomical tariffs on China-made EVs in the U.S. have delayed that event multiple times. For the record, the U.S. imposes 100% tariffs on electric cars coming out of Chinese factories. That would invariably push the price way beyond a reasonable bracket. Hence, Volvo is waiting until the production shifts to Ghent in Belgium to start selling it in North America.
If everything goes as planned, Volvo will keep its promise of selling it in the U.S. for a price tag in the vicinity of $34,950. When that happens, the sales volumes of the already popular Volvo EX30 will get a huge boost. At present, the EX30 is the 4th best-selling Volvo car globally this year so far. In September, the Swedish auto giant sold 9,610 units of the EX30. For reference, the XC60 was the best-selling model with 18,096 units sold. We have to wait for the 2025 launch to witness its appeal in North America.

Learn Electric Cars Says
In current times when the EV demand has slowed down in the biggest global markets like the U.S., China and Europe, many established car marques are reassessing their plans to go fully electric. As a result, we are seeing delays and cancellations across the board. In a similar vein, Volvo is facing a tough situation due to the mammoth tariffs in Europe and the U.S. on its Chinese-made EVs. Hence, it is understood that we will soon see it shifting a significant portion of its EV production to Europe. I shall keep an eye out as more details emerge.
