VW ID GTI Will Focus On Drivability Rather Than Power

The VW ID GTI will be based on the ID.2all which was revealed back in March 2023.

The VW ID GTI will ensure that the electric era is not devoid of the GTI badge from the German auto giant. VW CEO Thomas Schäfer has already confirmed that the GTI and Golf monikers will be part of the brand’s electric future. In fact, we saw the VW ID GTI Concept back in September last year. The performance version of the ID.2all could go into production in 2026.

At the recent GTI Fanfest, VW Tech Development Chief, Kai Grunitz mentioned that the EV won’t be the most powerful, but it will be the most fun to drive. In a recent interview with Autocar, he said, “GTI is alive and we’ll keep it alive in the future. The GTI badge is about passion, and when we started looking at ideas for an electric GTI, we knew it’s about more than just power.”

Confirming the company’s focus on driving dynamics, he remarked, “With an electric car, adding a lot of power is really easy, but do we need 300bhp or 350bhp? With a GTI, what’s more important than power is drivability. It will be a real go kart. I’ve driven a prototype and it’s really amazing.”

Note that the VW ID GTI will utilize the updated iteration of the MEB platform. The regular MEB architecture underpins multiple models from Cupra and Skoda too. Many reports online suggest that the performance EV will be able to adjust the drive system, running gear, steering, and sound experience of classic GTI models like the 76′ Golf GTI 1. Remember, the regular VW ID.2all will start at under 25,000 Euros (approximately $27,000).

It excites me a lot of see that carmakers are making conscious efforts to ensure that EVs don’t ‘kill’ the driving experience for enthusiasts. It is common knowledge that EVs are fast off the line due to the inherent torque of electric powertrains. However, recognizing the distinction between straight-line acceleration and great driving dynamics are two separate aspects. It would still require a lot of engineering to make cars that are capable of carrying an iconic moniker like GTI forward. Let us see how things shape up in times to come.
