VW Releases Official Sketches Of Its Upcoming Entry-Level EV

The global debut of the concept model is slated for March 3

The new entry-level EV from VW has been in the news for the past few days and the official sketches are out now. Understanding the value and necessity of affordable EVs, carmakers are focusing on bringing the costs down to drive volumes. A huge reason why Chinese carmakers are becoming incredibly popular across the globe is the low prices of their EVs. In fact, the difference is so stark that countries like the U.S. have imposed heavy tariffs on Chinese EVs to protect existing car marques.

We already saw the teaser image of the upcoming electric car from Volkswagen almost a week ago. However, the German auto giant shared the design sketches of this vehicle on social media yesterday. These capture a rather imposing stance for the compact crossover with the typically understated elements. The front fascia gets sleek headlamps with a black panel which houses the illuminated VW logo.

Down below, we witness the subtle bumper with vertically positioned LED DRLs along with black elements to lend it some sportiness. However, the side profile looks prominent, courtesy of massive alloy wheels. I reckon the production-spec version will bear slightly smaller units. Finally, the tail end constitutes a roof-mounted spoiler, a glass panel for the top section of the boot lid, relatively compact LED taillamps and a sporty bumper. Overall, the vehicle will have a modern outlook despite staying true to VW’s heritage.

Now we are yet to know what this new EV will be called. However, going by the original teaser, it could be “ID. One”. Also, the Instagram hashtag for these latest images indicates the name, “ID. Every1”. The launch is planned for 2027. It will sit alongside the ID. 2all as affordable urban EVs to cater to the masses. The latter will launch first in 2026. Also, the entry-level EV will be priced under €20,000 ($20,800), while the ID. 2all will bear a price tag of under €25,000 ($26,000). Also, these will use the shorter version of the MEB platform.

Andreas Mindt, Head of Design at VW, is responsible for creating these sketches. He remarked, “Bold confidence meets timeless simplicity! With its compact yet spacious design, our new entry-level electric car blends functionality and style effortlessly. From the charismatic front to the smiling rear end, every detail creates a joyful connection.” Furthermore, VW CEO, Thomas Schäfer, said that the entry-level model will be an “affordable, high-quality, profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe.”

Affordability seems to be the key aspect around which the future of EVs will revolve. The initial wave of EV adoption seems to be over. In order to reach the masses and generate some really high volumes, a low initial price is the only way forward. Of course, the battery costs and charging infrastructure will play a crucial role in addition to the buying costs. Let us see how things pan out in times to come.
