The compact electric SUV was already renamed for the European markets and now the new name will be applicable to the U.S. portfolio too
The 2025 Volvo XC40 Recharge is getting a few updates including a new name and a bigger battery pack. For the model year 2025 and beyond, the electric SUV will be christened EX40. This omits the ‘Recharge’ nameplate and comes in line up its cousins, the EX30 and EX90. The aim is clear- to have symmetry when it comes to its electric products lineup internationally. Similarly, the C40 Recharge will also be called EC40. With that, all Swedish car marque’s EVs’ names will start with an ‘E’.

However, the identity mark is not the only new thing it experiences. The 2025 Volvo EX40 now also carries an 82 kWh battery pack, up from 78 kWh. While that might be an incremental increase in size, the EPA-estimated range went up from 293 miles (471 km) to 296 miles 476 km) on a single charge. A key thing to note here is that the single-motor variant still continues to use the smaller battery pack. For the dual-motor trim, the new range is 260 miles (418 km) up from 254 miles (408 km).
Another minor improvement to both single-motor and dual-motor trims is the increased charging speed from 200 kW to 205 kW. It is not clear how this will impact the charging times. Nevertheless, you can expect a slight decrease in charging times as well. In this regard, even a slight time reduction will be appreciated by EV users while they are on a long trip on the highways.
Finally, the Geely-owned Swedish carmaker also announced that the EC40 coupe electric SUV is currently taking a break. It will return as the 2026 model with a minute increase in range. In any case, if you wish to get your hands on the 2025 Volvo EX40, you need to shell out $52,500 for the entry-level single-motor version and $60,750 for the dual-motor all-wheel-drive iteration. These prices don’t include the destination fee.

With the new nomenclature, the entire Volvo electric lineup gets consistency. This is useful for the global customers to communicate. Also, it removes any confusion which was possible until now between the American and European car owners. Now it remains to be seen how this year turns out, sales-wise, for the Swedish auto giant with offerings like the EX30, EX40 and EX90.
