Toyota And Lexus To Launch 15 EVs By 2027 – Report

Initially reluctant, the Japanese car marque now wants to go all-out on EVs to compete against its rivals

Toyota, including Lexus, plans to launch 15 EVs by 2027 as per a Nikkei Asia report. Not only that, the largest carmaker on the planet is targeting production of 1 million EVs per year by 2027. We know that Toyota entered the world of electrification back in the late 1990s with its Prius hybrid car. However, in the last few years, it had not been all that excited to completely switch from ICE to EV. Well, all that is about to change now.

Currently, Toyota manufactures 5 EV models in Japan and China. Remember that Toyota managed to sell 140,000 EVs globally in 2024. However, this accounts for less than 2% of its total global sales. According to the new plans, it will produce around 800,000 EVs in 2026, which is 50% less than its original plan, as per the report. Also, it had previously announced to sell 1.5 million EVs per year by 2026 and 3.5 million by 2030.

Clearly, the last few years have been turbulent for many EV giants. However, this year, the sales seemed to rise, but the latest tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump cast a spell of uncertainty around the growth of EVs. Nevertheless, carmakers are continuing on with their plans to get more models to the market for their customers.

One of the key upcoming launches for Toyota is the electric iteration of the Hilux. It will be made in Thailand from October this year. That will be a massive product for Toyota, considering the global success of Hilux over the last few decades. In addition to the bZ4X, Toyota will soon be launching the new C-HR+ EV. It will boast a 57.7 kWh and 77 kWh battery pack. The production will start at Toyota’s Takaoka plant in Japan in September. We also know that it is in the process of offering a 3-row EV to rival the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9.

The Japanese auto giant might have been late to the EV party, but it is surely not against it. With the kind of volumes it is doing overall, it wants to make sure that the EV charging infrastructure is developed enough and people accept EVs as the norm. In addition to new EV models, it has been working on solid-state EV battery technology for a while now. It is apparent that it is planning thoroughly for the future of mobility despite the slow start.
