The electric saloon iteration, likely to be called the i3, will arrive soon thereafter. As is the case with most modern EVs, the main attraction will be the electrical architecture and insane computing power.

BMW has announced that the entire operations of the electric SUV will be carried out by 4 electric control units. Together, these will form a whole new “digital nervous system”, something we will see in every Neue Klasse model. One control unit, which BMW calls the “Heart of Joy”, will be responsible for how the EV drives and feels. The second will take care of things like autonomous driving capabilities.

The next control unit is designed to manage BMW’s Panoramic iDrive (infotainment system), while the final control unit will incorporate everything else, including things like the lighting, climate control, etc. The German auto giant claims that the computing power of the EV will be around 20 times more than its current breed of vehicles. With the “zonal wiring harness architecture”, it has been able to reduce 600 m of wiring, resulting in 30% less weight, increasing efficiency.

Staying with more tech, BMW is also replacing 150 traditional fuses in the electric SUV with digital smart e-fuses. They actively manage power distribution to improve energy usage by 20%. Moreover, the EV will even boast 1,000 software modules, 20 GB of software and 500 million lines of code to make it a software-defined vehicle. These will be crucial for over-the-air updates, enhancing the ownership experience.
