Hyundai Ioniq 5 N vs Kia EV6 GT Drag Race

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N vs Kia EV6 GT – Drag Race Of The Siblings

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and the Kia EV6 GT share the powertrains and platforms.

This drag race between the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and the Kia EV6 GT will prove which one takes home the bragging rights. What I find the most fascinating aspect of this competition is that both these are essentially the same cars. They both use Hyundai’s E-GMP architecture and even share the powertrains. Since the Ioniq 5 N has been updated for the model year 2025 and the EV6 GT has not, there is a slight difference in the final power output. Hence, it becomes interesting to see how big of a difference it will be. This drag race occurred in a professional environment by Edmunds Cars.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N vs Kia EV6 GT – Drag Race

For this competition, the two distinct-looking siblings await at the start line. The Ioniq 5 N had everything in its settings in Sport+ mode save for the suspension which was in Sport mode. This was to ensure that the ride didn’t get too bumpy. However, the Launch Control was ON. For this round, the N-Grin Boost mode was OFF. On the other hand, the EV6 GT had all the settings to GT mode. The Maximum Power Output mode was enabled. As expected, both EVs had stability control disabled.

After the countdown, both drivers put the pedal to the metal. Initially, the EVs were close to each other. However, after some time, the power advantage of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N started to show. Hence, it completed the race ahead of the Kia EV6 GT. To maintain consistency of results and eliminate errors, the drivers were swapped for the second round. All the settings were kept the same. This time around, the Ioniq 5 N got an even better launch.

It was ahead from the get-go. Unfortunately, the EV6 GT never got a chance to catch up. It kept lagging behind as the Ioniq 5 N took the cake. Just for the last section (when the result was a foregone conclusion), the Ioniq 5 N’s driver engaged the N-Grin Boost mode, sprinting past the finish line. It completed the race in 33.2 seconds, in comparison to the EV6 GT, which took 34 seconds.

In terms of the 0 to 60 mph (97 kmph) sprint, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N just took 3.5 seconds, whereas the Kia EV6 GT took 3.52 seconds. To complete the quarter mile, the former used 11.2 seconds (with a top speed of 123.6 mph / 198.9 kmph) and the latter did so in 11.5 seconds (with a top speed of 120.3 mph / 193.6 kmph). The only aspect where the Kia was better was around the corner, pulling 1.08 G in comparison to Hyundai’s 1.06 G. All in all, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N was an unequivocal winner of this drag race.

In this modern era, drag races have been the default choice for most car experts to test the straight-line acceleration of two cars. I must mention here that our readers should never attempt anything like this. Car experts take a lot of precautions behind the scenes and they are professionals. You can simply rely on their results to know the performance of your car.

Apart from that, these Korean supercars are really offering impressive performance EVs at a fraction of the cost of the legacy supercar makers. Hence, it is going to be a tough fight for the latter going forward. More people will get access to exhilarating performances courtesy of Hyundai and Kia. The instant torque inherent to EVs has levelled the playing field. I am excited to see how the legacy performance car marques are going to respond.
