Lexus To Launch A 3-Row Electric SUV Next Year

The luxury division of Toyota is planning to expand its EV portfolio to keep up with the competition

The full-size 3-row electric SUV from Lexus is most likely to arrive in the markets by next year. Note that it will be based on the 2021 Electrified concept design. Remember, Toyota recently announced that it aims to launch 15 EVs by 2027, including those from Lexus. Clearly, the Japanese auto giant is giving full throttle. Everyone knows that Toyota and Lexus are slightly late to the EV party already. However, all that is about to change very soon.

Now, the upcoming EV will most likely be called TZ. It will bear the same underpinnings as the Toyota bZ5X. Lexus loyalists might also recognize that this EV could be the electric alternative to the existing TX. Going by the recent trademarks filed by Lexus, we might witness the large electric SUV in two trims – TZ450e and TZ550e. Also, to keep the costs in check, it could share components with the RZ.

In terms of the design, we can expect the production model to bear certain similarities to the RZ and the Electrified Concept. This means we could get sharp lines up front along with sleek LED lighting, a massive sealed-off section and a sturdy skid plate. On the sides, one can expect elegant alloy wheels, curve-less creases and flaring wheel arches. Finally, the tail end could incorporate a connected LED taillamp setup along with a roof-mounted spoiler and a solid skid plate.

Even though the details pertaining to the specifications are scarce, we can expect some inspiration from the RZ lineup. For reference, the sportiest RZ 550e F Sport generates a whopping 402 hp (300 kW) of peak power from an all-wheel-drive configuration. It enables a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration time of just 4.4 seconds. The range is a decent 280 miles (450 km).

The regular RZ 550e with two electric motors produce 375 hp (280 kW) and boasts a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time of 4.6 seconds. The range increases to 311 miles (500 km) with this setup. Finally, the entry-level RZ 350e uses a single electric motor at the front axle to produce 224 hp (167 kW) and 269 Nm (198 lb-ft) of maximum power and torque, respectively. The range here is an impressive 357 miles (575 km). It will be interesting to see which combination the new EV will carry.
