The American SUV maker is bullish not just on plug-in hybrids, but also on traditional hybrids going forward. Jeep is anticipating the sales of its plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) by a cool 50% this year itself. That is quite ambitious considering its Wrangler 4xe is already the best-selling plug-in hybrid in the U.S. since Q2 2021. What is more fascinating is the fact that Jeep makes some of the most successful and hardcore off-roading vehicles on the planet. When we talk about electrification, this is not the first segment that comes to mind. Therefore, this number might not be out of the realm of possibility. The Gladiator 4xe is expected to carry a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine with a 17.3 kWh Lithium-ion battery pack and an electric motor. The combined output with this configuration is a healthy 375 hp (280 kW) and 470 lb-ft (637 Nm) of peak power and torque. Being a true PHEV, the pure electric range is a usable 21 miles (34 km). This is the same engine as the Wrangler. Additionally, Jeep revealed plans to introduce the 4xe variants of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer by 2025 as well. As a matter of fact, they will come with a range-extended powertrain, something becoming quite popular with large SUVs lately. It could borrow the configuration from the Ram 1500 Ramcharger. This setup includes a ginormous 92 kWh battery pack along with a 3.6-liter V6 engine which acts as a generator and two electric motors for an all-wheel-drive configuration. The result is a respectable 663 hp (494 kW) and 615 lb-ft (833 Nm) of peak power and torque. However, the main attraction is the range of up to 690 miles (1,110 km). The iconic Italian automaker also thinks that it is a little too early for fully electric supercars just yet. As per the official press release, the upcoming Lamborghini Huracan successor will come equipped with a twin-turbo hybrid V8 engine. Codenamed the Lamborghini 634, the supercar will join the elite list of High-Performance Electrified Vehicles (HPEVs) in the Italian supercar marque’s portfolio. This lineup already includes the likes of the Revuelto and Urus SE. The launch of the Lamborghini 634 is slated for this year (2024). Performing the transmission duties in tandem with this mill is a sporty and quick-shifting 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The aim is to surpass the performance of the existing Huracan range. Note that the current 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine generates a whopping 800 CV (800 PS) between 9,000 and 9,750 RPM. The highest this motor could rev is a spine-chilling 10,000 RPM, which is already racing car territory. Also, the drivers can experience a maximum torque of 730 Nm (538 lb-ft) between 4,000 and 7,000 RPM. At the rear, the electric powertrain is placed between the combustion engine and the transmission. It looks like increasingly more carmakers are having to delay their complete electrification plans to incorporate a transitional step in the journey of future mobility. VW CEO, Thomas Schäfer, spoke at the Financial Times Future of the Car conference about PHEVs being the necessary transitional technology to reach the ultimate goal of electric mobility. While battery-electric drive is plateauing out a bit at the moment, we still need this transitional technology.” I must mention here that the VW CEO is not backing out of the EV plans as he is “absolutely sure the future is electric”. Furthermore, he confirms that VW will carry on with what it has and will not build a completely new powertrain. Finally, he also elucidates that VW won’t necessarily have a hybrid variant of every model it sells in every part of the world. Instead, the German auto giant will focus on reducing the costs of hybrids while boosting the pure electric range to offer something meaningful to the customers.
