The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is making all the headlines in its special edition avatars smashing records at some of the most prestigious races in the world.
The Korean auto giant has been dropping teasers to create a buzz around the upcoming affordable compact electric SUV.
Once launched, it will be the cheapest electric car from the Korean auto giant by quite some margin. Hyundai has officially teased the Casper-based Inster sub-compact EV ahead of the debut at the Busan International Mobility Show in late June. The first glimpses of the A-segment EV evidently inform about Casper’s inspiration. Note that Casper is a Korea-only sub-compact SUV which was introduced back in 2021. It was almost imminent that an electric version of the Casper would eventually make its way into the international market at some point. Later this month, we get to acquaint ourselves with the Inster at the Busan International Mobility Show in South Korea. The first aspect one notices is the round LED DRLs on the bumper. On top of these sit LED plus pixel-graphic turn indicators on the bonnet. Hyundai is following the modern approach of placing the main headlights on the bumper. These bear a striking resemblance with the Casper. The silhouette even captures functional roof rails. That accentuates the SUV-ish traits even further. The charging point is located at the front and one can also see a rather unique 4-spoked alloy wheel pattern. While it is a bit difficult to estimate the dimensions of the EV from these images, I reckon they would be in the vicinity of Casper. Interestingly, the teaser images even capture a tiny bit of the rear profile. Here, we witness the ‘Inster’ badging and pixel LED taillamp pattern. This is something similar to what the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 get. I am also inclined to believe that it will bear an upright stance, much similar to the Casper. Hyundai says that the ‘Inster’ name is derived from “intimate” and “innovative” and “it will set new standards in terms of driving range, technology, and safety features, redefining what buyers can expect from a vehicle in this class.” Since the sub-compact EV is yet to debut, we don’t have any details regarding the powertrain and battery. However, the press release states that the maximum projected range of the Hyundai Inster EV will be 355 km (220 miles) (WLTP). Hence, we can ascertain that it is for urban usage as a daily driver rather than for long highway hauls. That is in line with what one expects from the estimated €20,000 (~ $21,500) price tag EV. In order to make EVs mass market, cost is the primary hurdle. We have seen the EV demand, sort of, plateauing in recent times in the biggest automobile markets – the U.S. and China. I feel in order to spur the demand now, the masses have to be involved. The first wave attracted contributions more from the relatively affluent sections of society. However, to make EVs a household name, prices have to be lower. That is where sub-$25,000 EVs come into the picture. Once the initial costs drop, people will be more open to taking the plunge. Granted, a lot of work still needs to be done on developing adequate charging infrastructure. But that is a long-term process and is being done rapidly. Finally, governments all across the major automobile markets in the world are offering incentives and subsidies to promote EVs. With time, we should be able to see the impact of all these factors. An EV like the Inster could be instrumental in creating a wave of affordable electric cars in times to come.
The Korean auto giant joins hands with Toray Industries, Inc. to develop advanced materials for a new era of mobility. The future Hyundai EVs stand to benefit from advanced materials including carbon fiber, for enhanced performance. Hyundai Motor Company has relentlessly been working toward embracing all facets of electric mobility. This includes sustainability, racing, affordability, technology, connectivity and now material science. The aim of the Korean car marque is clear, “Hyundai Motor Group aims to leverage this strategic partnership to strengthen its position as a global leader in mobility solutions”, says Chang Song, Hyundai’s President. The prime qualities of carbon fiber, as many of you would already be aware of, include lightweight, high strength, and heat resistance properties. Toray Industries President, Mitsuo Ohya remarked, “Toray Industries has developed innovative technology and materials focusing on electrification and sustainability to address the needs of customers in the constantly evolving automotive industry. We are happy to partner with Hyundai Motor Group to continue this innovation.” Among other key alliances of Toray Industries are with a California-based Joby Aviation. As a part of this partnership, Joby Aviation will utilize carbon fiber from Toray Industries to create its upcoming all-electric air taxi. In addition to that, the other prominent partnership is with Lilium. It is a German aerospace firm. In this case, the carbon fiber composite will be used on its fully electric five-seater jet. The Lilium Jet is an emissions-free aircraft that can take off and land vertically. It is designed to provide high-speed regional connections of up to 300 km in under 60 minutes. The aircraft’s primary structures, such as the fuselage, wings and flaps will all be made from carbon fiber. Reduction in weight always boosts the efficiency of automobiles. Hyundai aims to bring that aspect to its EVs, hopefully at a much more affordable price point. We also know that Hyundai has been creating the racing EVs after the Ioniq 5 N. Hence, it already offers re-tuned versions of its existing EVs. If it starts using carbon fiber elements, the regular EVs will get even more efficient. I shall keep an eye out for further developments in this regard as they unfold.

Its ‘N Division’ has been instrumental in developing appropriate versions of Ioniq 5 N to feature in these prestigious and challenging races. This represents the direction the Korean carmaker is heading in. Apart from bagging eminent accolades from critics and customers alike for its Ioniq range of electric cars, it is even ensuring that it pushes the envelope with racing editions of the Ioniq 5 N. I can’t wait to experience what Hyundai Motor Group comes up with next.
The Hyundai counterpart to the already successful Kia EV9 is prepping for its official unveiling at the Busan Auto Show next month. Hyundai Ioniq 7 electric SUV will be the first 3-row BEV from the Korean auto giant. It is the production version of the Hyundai Concept SEVEN showcased back in 2021. Utilizing Hyundai’s recognized E-GMP architecture, the large SUV was seen testing on roads in its domestic market wearing a thick camouflage. The debut is slated for June 27 at the 2024 Busan Motor Show. The production will commence at Hyundai’s Asan plant in South Korea. I was able to squeeze out some design details from the latest spotting. While the camouflage covers the body of the 7-seat EV, the front fascia reveals a split-LED headlamp setup. It includes LED DRLs on the bonnet bifurcating the headlamp cluster into two halves and another vertically-oriented LED headlamp unit on the bumper below. This layout bears a resemblance to the Concept SEVEN. On the sides, I find this alloy wheel design rather similar to what regular ICE Hyundai cars wear. I don’t believe this pattern will be carried forward to the production-spec version. That will likely have a design which will aid the aerodynamics of the electric SUV. In fact, we have seen such alloy wheels on the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6. The side profile even showcases large windows, flush-fitting door handles, black side pillars and a slightly sloping roofline toward the rear. Coming to the tail section, we experience a unique appearance with a boxy silhouette, and interesting LED taillamps which appear to cover the edges of the entire bootlid including the vertical section on the sides and a horizontal section on the top. Overall, the Hyundai Ioniq 7 will offer its distinct identity with a road presence unlike anything else. Hyundai Ioniq 7 Electric SUV – Specs While there have been no official announcements just yet, I expect it to share the powertrain options with the Kia EV9. The latter gets either a 76.1 kWh or a 99.8 kWh battery pack. In the most powerful dual-motor AWD settings, the EV9 makes a healthy 378 hp and 700 Nm of maximum power and torque. The official driving range is a decent 349 miles (562 km) as per WLTP. The 350 kW DC fast charging and 800-volt system allow recuperation of 154 miles (248 km) of range in just 15 minutes. In the regular single-motor RWD version, the peak power and torque are usable 200 hp and 350 Nm. Just like the EV9 GT, the Hyundai counterpart could see an N version down the line. More details will be revealed closer to the launch. Specs (exp.) I don’t need to tell you that electric cars from Hyundai and Kia have been immensely popular across the globe in the last couple of years. In fact, this is validated by the fact that they have bagged some prestigious awards from critics. In addition to that, the monthly sales of these EVs are a testament to how well the customers have embraced them. EVs like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Hyundai Ioniq 6, Kia EV6 and Kia EV9 and becoming popular among the masses. Going forward, the Hyundai Ioniq 7 is about to join this list. Since it will largely share components, powertrains and features with the EV9, the chances of its success are high. I shall keep an eye out for more information about the Ioniq 7 as and when it appears. However, I must admit that things look positive for Hyundai’s iteration of the EV9.

However, looking at the way things are going for the Korean automobile giant, these endeavours are paying off. Its Ioniq range of EVs has received immense applause from critics and consumers alike. The N Division has been successful since its inception. It remains to be seen how the Ioniq 5 N is accepted by the buyers going forward. We know that the N version of the Ioniq 6 in is the works and will arrive in the next few months. The Korean auto giant is reportedly working on the fire-breathing iteration of the low-slung electric sedan. After gathering positive reviews from industry experts for the Ioniq 5 N, Hyundai is gearing up to launch the Ioniq 6 N. The Korean car marque is evidently excited about the performance versions of its Ioniq electric vehicle range. Having gained massive prominence, the Ioniq 5 is already available with the N badge, the first EV to wear it, while the Ioniq 6 could follow by 2025. The latest case comes from somewhere in Germany. It makes sense to test in Deutschland at the iconic Nürburgring track. By the looks of things, the electric monster will borrow most elements from the regular Ioniq 6. However, there will be a few aspects to enhance the performance. This ranges from aesthetic and aerodynamic components to mechanical modifications. Some of the most visual alterations include the likes of wider tracks, fender extensions, red brake callipers, an upgraded braking system, an extension of the rear spoiler and more. Furthermore, there will be an aggressive body kit in the production model. Still, these spy images give us a clear clue as to what the final product will look like. Notably, Hyundai could also deploy its Active Skirts technology to enhance aerodynamics even more. Hyundai Ioniq 6 N – Specs Albeit there are no official announcements from the Korean carmaker, it should be safe to assume that the Ioniq 6 N will borrow the powertrain from the Ioniq 5 N. Hence, we could see the dual-motor AWD version which could produce 641 hp of peak power for 10 seconds using the N Grin Boost function, just like the Ioniq 5 N. In regular settings, this mill will churn out a still impressive 601 hp and 770 Nm of peak power and torque. Powering the electric performance sedan will be an 84 kWh battery. To take things to a whole new level in terms of driving engagement, the Ioniq 6 N could take advantage of the N e-shift function which mimics an 8-speed automatic transmission to give the jolts experienced during actual gear shifts in IC cars by regulating motor torque. On top of that, it will also get the N Active Sound+ mode which imitates the sound of Hyundai’s 2.0-litre turbocharged engine. The overall aim is to bring the driving engagement and feel as close to orthodox performance vehicles as possible.
