Toyota Solid State Battery Launch

Toyota Gets Nod For Its All-Solid-State EV Battery In Japan

The Japanese auto giant plans to develop next-generation batteries at Prime Planet Energy Solution and Primeearth EV Energy

Toyota will finally be able to develop and build its much-anticipated all-solid-state EV battery in Japan. Note that the Japanese car marque will work with its subsidiaries to mass produce a wide range of EV batteries. The ultimate aim is to reduce dependence on China and Korea. In line with that, Toyota showcased its EV battery roadmap last year. As per that plan, it will start manufacturing the first “Performance” EV batteries by 2026.

Toyota All-Solid-State EV Battery

Japan’s Ministry of Trade and Industry (METI) has officially given the approval to Toyota’s all-solid-state EV battery plans. This certification is applicable to Toyota and its multiple subsidiaries. Under this announcement, Toyota can build its own next-gen EV batteries as a part of Japan’s plans to boost domestic supply. It can now produce next-gen batteries at Prime Planet Energy Solution and Primeearth EV Energy.

Remember, Toyota-affiliated companies mass produce batteries for its hybrid models. However, the transition to all-electric models is underway. Toyota acquired full control of Primeearth EV Energy earlier in the year, a former joint venture with Panasonic. With this cooperation, Toyota will be able to respond flexibly to the growing battery demand. As per Toyota’s roadmap, the “Performance” batteries will arrive in 2026, while the “Popularization” will continue until the end of 2027.

These two batteries will offer a range of around 800 km (500 miles) and 600 km (373 miles), respectively, on the WLTP cycle. However, after 2028, things get interesting. That is when the “High Performance” batteries are planned for. These will boast a driving range of 1,000 km (620 miles) on a single charge as per WLTP. More importantly, the fast charging time will be 20 minutes. At this time, the next stage will incorporate all-solid-state batteries with a similar range but a charging time of just 10 minutes.

In all honesty, it is a bit hard to get excited about this news from Toyota because it has been promising solid-state EV batteries since 2021. Nevertheless, it will be a huge event when one of the biggest legacy carmakers in the world finally commences developing futuristic EV batteries in-house. However, even the current plans point to at least around 2028 for us to witness those batteries in the flesh. Still, we shall keep an eye out for further developments in this regard.
