The existing range figures failed to impress potential customers and industry experts.
The Range Extender iteration of the Tesla Cybertruck is finally happening. It is common knowledge that potential customers and automobile experts were slightly disappointed with the range of the electric pickup truck. It was launched in December 2023, after it was announced some 4 years ago. While the specifications are pretty impressive, the price and range, not so much. To remedy that, the American EV giant announced that an additional battery will mounted in the cargo bed to boost range.

This will lead to a significant bump in how far the EV will travel on a single charge. However, it will come at a considerable cost. Even though the official price details elude us at the moment, the website shows this to be around $16,000. Not just that, the auxiliary battery pack will eat up about 35% of the cargo bed capacity. The big catch is that you will need to visit the official Tesla service centre to mount or remove the battery pack.
Tesla Cybertruck Lead Engineer, Wes Morrill, says that this battery pack has to be structurally mounted to satisfy the safety concerns. Hence, it will be a long-drawn process which the users can’t perform on their own. Talking about the main point, this new battery pack will take the range from 340 miles (547 km) to 470 miles (756 km) in the dual-motor configuration and from 320 miles (515 km) to 440 miles (708 km) in the Cyberbeast trim. These are some pretty healthy buffs.
Supervised Full Self-Driving v12.5 Release
In some other Tesla news, the U.S. EV giant is releasing the Supervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) v12.5. Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to his other company, X, to announce this news. The tweet said, “FSD 12.5.1 starts wide release today. Please connect your Tesla to WiFi to receive the update.” This could be the beginning of Tesla toward the path of Unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology.

The Tesla Cybertruck Range Extender could just be what the doctor ordered. A substantial surge in range is always a great enhancement to any EV. This is more so when the electric pickup truck promises so much performance but the owners had to be wary of the range (or lack thereof). With the new battery pack, the buyers will get to do so much more. Sure, it comes at a price in addition to a compromise on the cargo capacity. Still, I reckon most people would be happy with this trade-off in exchange for the added range.
