Rivian EV Owners Get More Range and Power via OTA Update

Rivian Owners Can Now Access More Range, Power And New ‘Rally Mode’

It is fascinating to see how easily the performance specifications of EVs can be altered by mere OTA updates

Rivian EV owners can now rejoice as they become eligible to unlock more range, power and a new ‘Rally Mode’. Being electric vehicles, simply by some OTA updates, the very core of the vehicle can be controlled. In this case, there is the option to increase range, as well as performance, which are two of the most critical elements of any EV. However, you must note that all this will come at a price.

Rivian Owners Can Now Access More Range, Power And New ‘Rally Mode’

With the help of the upcoming 2025.06 software update, Rivian will offer second-generation R1S and R1T EVs a Performance upgrade. This was confirmed by Rivian’s head of software, Wassym Bensaid. At the moment, this update is solely available while configuring a new Dual Motor R1S or R1T or if you opt for the EV with it loaded from Rivian’s inventory.

You will need to part with $5,000 for this package. This enables a significant bump in power from 533 hp to 665 hp. In terms of torque figures, there is an increase from 610 lb-ft (827 Nm) to 829 lb-ft (1,124 Nm). That is already a massive jump. This results in a 0-60 mph (96 km/h) acceleration time of just 3.4 seconds, down from 4.5 seconds. Furthermore, you also get Sport and Sand modes for a more reliable performance across various terrains.

Finally, there will also be a new Rally Mode. Rivian claims that it “softens damping to help reach higher speeds”. Bensaid confirmed that the update is “coming soon” without putting an exact date to it. Thankfully, the potential customers will be able to use Rivian Rewards. Also, the update will unlock battery’s potential for added range. The exact figures still elude us at this point.

I must admit the ease to alter the very nature of an EV via OTA updates fascinates me quite a lot. I believe that having so many electronic components connected with the latest technology is a great combination to enhance the overall user experience for the users. Also, I am certain that this will become the norm in the coming years.
