Hyundai Inster EV Teaser Image

Hyundai Casper-based Inster Sub-compact EV Teased w/ 355 km of Range

Once launched, it will be the cheapest electric car from the Korean auto giant by quite some margin. Hyundai has officially teased the Casper-based Inster sub-compact EV ahead of the debut at the Busan International Mobility Show in late June. The first glimpses of the A-segment EV evidently inform about Casper’s inspiration. Note that Casper is a Korea-only sub-compact SUV which was introduced back in 2021. It was almost imminent that an electric version of the Casper would eventually make its way into the international market at some point. Later this month, we get to acquaint ourselves with the Inster at the Busan International Mobility Show in South Korea. You might also like: Upcoming Affordable Kia Electric EVs – EV2 and EV3 Hyundai Inster Sub-Compact EV The official images surfaced courtesy of an official press release by Hyundai. The first aspect one notices is the round LED DRLs on the bumper. On top of these sit LED plus pixel-graphic turn indicators on the bonnet. Hyundai is following the modern approach of placing the main headlights on the bumper. These bear a striking resemblance with the Casper. The silhouette even captures functional roof rails. That accentuates the SUV-ish traits even further. The charging point is located at the front and one can also see a rather unique 4-spoked alloy wheel pattern. While it is a bit difficult to estimate the dimensions of the EV from these images, I reckon they would be in the vicinity of Casper. Interestingly, the teaser images even capture a tiny bit of the rear profile. Here, we witness the ‘Inster’ badging and pixel LED taillamp pattern. This is something similar to what the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 get. I am also inclined to believe that it will bear an upright stance, much similar to the Casper. Hyundai says that the ‘Inster’ name is derived from “intimate” and “innovative” and “it will set new standards in terms of driving range, technology, and safety features, redefining what buyers can expect from a vehicle in this class.” Since the sub-compact EV is yet to debut, we don’t have any details regarding the powertrain and battery. However, the press release states that the maximum projected range of the Hyundai Inster EV will be 355 km (220 miles) (WLTP). Hence, we can ascertain that it is for urban usage as a daily driver rather than for long highway hauls. That is in line with what one expects from the estimated €20,000 (~ $21,500) price tag EV. You might also like: Hyundai Ioniq 7 Electric SUV Spied Testing Ahead of June 27 Debut Learn Electric Cars Says The world is moving toward affordable electric cars. In order to make EVs mass market, cost is the primary hurdle. We have seen the EV demand, sort of, plateauing in recent times in the biggest automobile markets – the U.S. and China. I feel in order to spur the demand now, the masses have to be involved. The first wave attracted contributions more from the relatively affluent sections of society. However, to make EVs a household name, prices have to be lower. That is where sub-$25,000 EVs come into the picture. Once the initial costs drop, people will be more open to taking the plunge. Granted, a lot of work still needs to be done on developing adequate charging infrastructure. But that is a long-term process and is being done rapidly. Finally, governments all across the major automobile markets in the world are offering incentives and subsidies to promote EVs. With time, we should be able to see the impact of all these factors. An EV like the Inster could be instrumental in creating a wave of affordable electric cars in times to come.

2025 Rivian R1S Spotted Testing

Latest Spotting of 2025 Rivian R1S Reveals New Design Details

The 2025 R1 models will not just get aesthetic enhancements, but performance updates too. The 2025 Rivian R1S was caught testing recently which unveiled some design alterations and other details in comparison to the existing model. The American EV startup will refresh its electric SUV, R1S, just after two years of being in production. This implies that Rivian wants to keep its portfolio fresh amidst increasing competition and projected slowdown in EV sales. While we await official announcements, I suspect the launch might take place on June 27, which happens to be the Investor Day for Rivian. You might also like: Discounts On Rivian R1T And R1S – All You Want To Know Spy Shots Reveal Details of 2025 Rivian R1S The prototypes were seen performing test runs on streets without wearing any camouflage. As a result, we were able to discover a new set of LED headlamps. These will be slightly more sculpted and muscular in contrast to the current model lending it a modern appearance. Apart from that, the overall design silhouette will resemble the current model. Look closely and you will also spot the Black Package which incorporates dark elements on the bumpers, black wheels and de-chrome body. These spy images were uploaded to a Rivian Forums thread by a user named Peytonrg. He even mentions that, in addition to the aforementioned design updates, the 2025 Rivian R1S will even get silver wheel callipers. Another user claimed that he spotted the prototype a couple of days ago. He observed a new camera module for the mirrors, a “charger disconnect” button near the port, new alloy wheels and a slimmer lightbar. Therefore, I expect minor tweaks to design and functionality. The R1T pickup will also borrow most of these elements. You might also like: 4 Electric Pickup Trucks Driven Until They Died – Tesla, Ford, Rivian, Chevy Specs, New Battery and Heat Pump In addition to the exterior styling and some new features, the main talking point about the 2025 Rivian R1 models is the new battery and heat pump. The latter will be standard across the range. The battery will be a 92.5 kWh LFP unit instead of 105.9 kWh. This also results in a reduction of weight by 150 lbs (70 kg). LFP batteries will have a long-range, low cost and less use of rare earth minerals. There will be the option of choosing between either 20-inch or 22-inch alloy wheels. Finally, the AC compressor will be relocated to improve NVH (Noise, Vibrations, Harshness) levels. All this information surfaced courtesy of a leaked document a few days ago. Now the official EPA-estimated range figures will be available at a later stage. But the leaked documents mention a range of 380 miles (612 km) in the city and 322 miles (518 km) on the highway with 20-inch alloys. With the larger 22-inchers, however, this stat elevates to a rather enticing 405 miles (652 km) in the city and 340 miles (547 km) on the highway. Remember, Rivian EVs are now also eligible to use Tesla’s Supercharging network. It will continue to get the CCS port and the owners could access the Superchargers via an NACS adapter. They lock horns with the giants of the industry including the likes of the Tesla Cybetruck, Ford F-150 Lightning, GMC Hummer EV and Chevrolet Silverado EV. Hence, it makes sense for the American EV startup to keep its product range fresh. Also, the next step is toward the lower end of the market with products like the R3 and R2 in the pipeline. That will be the mass market strategy.

2025 Rivian R1 EVs To Get Heat Pump As Standard, New LFP Battery

The upcoming 2025 iterations of the R1 models (R1T and R1S) will bear exciting new components including a heat pump and a new LFP battery. The 2025 Rivian R1 models will come with an LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery along with a series of updates. The American EV startup has been gaining popularity among the masses for quite some time now. It wants to ensure that the models on sale remain fresh. That is critical to tackle the growing competition in this electric pickup truck space. This information stems from leaked certification documents. The release of the 2025 models might take place on June 27 (Investor Day). You might also like: 4 Electric Pickup Trucks Driven Until They Died – Tesla, Ford, Rivian, Chevy 2025 Rivian R1 To Get LFP Battery There is a slew of information in the leaked documents. Firstly, the standard battery size would be reduced from 105.9 kWh to 92.5 kWh. This will also lead to a reduction in weight by 150 lbs (70 kg). Furthermore, this battery will be available with LFP chemistry. These are low-density batteries with a long life, limited usage of rare earth minerals and low cost. Clearly, the American EV startup is focusing on maximizing profitability. Apart from the battery pack, the 2025 Rivian R1 dual-motor AWD models will also get the option of choosing between either 20-inch or 22-inch alloy wheels. Gone are the 21-inchers. The 22-inch wheels will be offered in two configurations – Aero and Performance. The fast charging capabilities will be 210 kW (similar to the current models). Furthermore, the AC compressor will be relocated to improve NVH (Noise, Vibrations, Harshness) levels. Also, heat pump will be standard across the range. The documents also mention that the 20-inch wheels will allow a range of 380 miles (612 km) in the city and 322 miles (518 km) on the highway. This number surges to a rather attractive 405 miles (652 km) in the city and 340 miles (547 km) on the highway with the 22-inchers. I must mention here that these stats were recorded on a rolling road and will be lower in the real world. Also, we have to wait for the official EPA tests for final range figures. Finally, we know that Rivian is now eligible to use Tesla’s Supercharging network. That is why it was considered that the 2025 models could come with NACS as standard from the factory. But that is not the case. It will continue to get the CCS port and the owners could access the Superchargers via an NACS adapter. You might also like: Rivian R3 Reminds Us Of Hyundai Ioniq 5, R2 Also Spotted Testing Learn Electric Cars Says After the arrival of the Tesla Cybetruck, the electric pickup truck category is experiencing fierce competition. Products like the Ford F-150 Lightning, GMC Hummer EV and Chevrolet Silverado EV are the prime rivals of the Rivian R1T. It makes sense to keep updating these models so that potential buyers can experience fresh updates from time to time. While there won’t be too many major changes to the 2025 Rivian R1 models, the incremental improvements will go a long way in ensuring customers’ interest.

Hyundai Ioniq 7 Spied Side Profile

Hyundai Ioniq 7 Electric SUV Spied Testing Ahead of June 27 Debut

The Hyundai counterpart to the already successful Kia EV9 is prepping for its official unveiling at the Busan Auto Show next month. Hyundai Ioniq 7 electric SUV will be the first 3-row BEV from the Korean auto giant. It is the production version of the Hyundai Concept SEVEN showcased back in 2021. Utilizing Hyundai’s recognized E-GMP architecture, the large SUV was seen testing on roads in its domestic market wearing a thick camouflage. The debut is slated for June 27 at the 2024 Busan Motor Show. The production will commence at Hyundai’s Asan plant in South Korea. I was able to squeeze out some design details from the latest spotting. You might also like: Hyundai To Launch New EV Brand In China; Plans 5 EVs In 3 Years Hyundai Ioniq 7 Electric SUV – Design I encountered the spy media on the Autospy portal. While the camouflage covers the body of the 7-seat EV, the front fascia reveals a split-LED headlamp setup. It includes LED DRLs on the bonnet bifurcating the headlamp cluster into two halves and another vertically-oriented LED headlamp unit on the bumper below. This layout bears a resemblance to the Concept SEVEN. On the sides, I find this alloy wheel design rather similar to what regular ICE Hyundai cars wear. I don’t believe this pattern will be carried forward to the production-spec version. That will likely have a design which will aid the aerodynamics of the electric SUV. In fact, we have seen such alloy wheels on the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6. The side profile even showcases large windows, flush-fitting door handles, black side pillars and a slightly sloping roofline toward the rear. Coming to the tail section, we experience a unique appearance with a boxy silhouette, and interesting LED taillamps which appear to cover the edges of the entire bootlid including the vertical section on the sides and a horizontal section on the top. Overall, the Hyundai Ioniq 7 will offer its distinct identity with a road presence unlike anything else. Hyundai Ioniq 7 Electric SUV – Specs While there have been no official announcements just yet, I expect it to share the powertrain options with the Kia EV9. The latter gets either a 76.1 kWh or a 99.8 kWh battery pack. In the most powerful dual-motor AWD settings, the EV9 makes a healthy 378 hp and 700 Nm of maximum power and torque. The official driving range is a decent 349 miles (562 km) as per WLTP. The 350 kW DC fast charging and 800-volt system allow recuperation of 154 miles (248 km) of range in just 15 minutes. In the regular single-motor RWD version, the peak power and torque are usable 200 hp and 350 Nm. Just like the EV9 GT, the Hyundai counterpart could see an N version down the line. More details will be revealed closer to the launch. Specs (exp.) Tesla Model 3 and Y as Used Electric Cars

2 in Top 5 Used EVs Come From Tesla as Used Car Industry Grows

The used electric car industry is growing strongly as more EVs get old and people have the option of choosing new models. In a recent study, it was found that 2 in every 5 used electric cars belong to Tesla. Now, that shouldn’t be a huge surprise for anyone. Tesla is the largest EV maker in the world. It has been widely regarded as the poster boy for the electric mobility revolution across the globe for almost a decade. As the EV market matures, we are bound to have a surge of EVs in the user car market. The trend of people opting for used electric cars is in an upward momentum. Let us glance at the top 10 used electric cars in the U.S. at the moment. The bottom half of the table is dominated by Audi e-tron, Chevrolet Bolt EUV, Bolt EV, Tesla Model S and Hyundai Ioniq 5, respectively. Hence, in total, there are 3 Tesla cars in the list of top 10 used electric cars on sale in the U.S. at the moment. Fun fact, the Tesla Model X fell out of this list this time around. Moreover, user car giant CarMax reports that searches for EVs on its website grew by 177% between 2021 and 2024. However, things can get a bit complicated with EVs due to the astronomical expenses attached to battery replacement. I am particularly intrigued to see how will that shape the mindset of potential buyers. We know that battery replacement is the biggest cost associated with the ownership experience of electric cars. Generally, carmakers offer a warranty of around 150,000 – 200,000 km or 8 years (whichever is earlier). Therefore, if EVs are available well before that time period, people would be comfortable spending money. But I don’t see a scenario where anyone would want to risk it near the 8-year mark. Let’s see how things pan out in this regard going forward.

Kia EV9 GT 2024 CEO Investor Day

Kia EV9 GT Will Boast 0-62 mph Time of 4 Secs, Debut in January 2025

The performance version of the ultra-practical 7-seat electric SUV from Kia will debut in the first month of next year. The fire-breathing Kia EV9 GT is slated to debut in January 2025, as per the official video from Kia’s 2024 CEO Investor Day Event which took place in Seoul, South Korea. Hence, the 7-seat electric SUV is a critically acclaimed product already. With such validation for the regular model, the GT trim is bound to attract traction. Even though the spy media has spotted it testing at Germany’s iconic Nürburgring track, this is the first time Kia has officially shared some details. You might also like: Upcoming Affordable Kia Electric EVs – EV2 and EV3 Kia EV9 GT To Debut In Jan 2025 The 1-hour-27-minute-long video highlights Kia’s plans for the future. Around the 30-minute mark in this video, the President and CEO of Kia, Ho Sung Song, described the upcoming EV9 GT. While there were not too many specifics, there was enough data to point us towards the direction Kia is willing to take. Ho Sung Song mentions that it will continue to focus on the GT (performance) trims of its dedicated EVs. In fact, the GT version of the EV6 is already on sale in many international markets. The key details about the upcoming EV9 GT include “enormous power output” to achieve a remarkable 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) acceleration time of just 4 seconds. That is a whole 1.3 seconds faster than the EV9 GT-Line and just 0.5 seconds slower than the EV6 GT. This is especially impressive considering the EV9 GT-Line weighs a gargantuan 2,674 kg (Kerb) aka 5,895 lbs and 3,240 kg (Gross) aka 7,143 lbs. Hence, we could expect a bump in 576 hp and 738 Nm (545 lb-ft) figures found in the EV6 GT. Generally, Kia’s GT models come with a tweaked suspension setup along with tons of bodywork to enhance aerodynamics, along with new alloys and tyres for added traction during enthusiast driving. Hence, we could safely assume this to be the case with the upcoming EV9 GT too. More details will surface as time progresses and the debut nears. Nio ET7 Semi Solid State Battery Range

Nio ET7 Achieves 665 Miles w/ Semi-Solid State Battery In Real World

The Chinese automotive company has just rolled off its 150 kWh solid-state battery off the assembly line a few days ago. Nio ET7 has bagged a rather impressive milestone of completing 665 miles (1,070 km) on a single charge using the semi-solid state battery. This latest battery from Nio has a capacity of a substantial 150 kWh. This marked the first test of the ultra-long-range battery pack since its mass production. In December 2023, Nio Founder, Chairman and CEO, William Li drove the 2023 ET7 with a 150 kWh semi-solid state battery in a challenge where he drove for 1,044 km with 36 km of remaining CLTC range. For these three routes, the electric car was able to drive for 1,070 km (665 mi.), 1,062 km (660 mi.) and 1,046 km (650 mi.), respectively. In the longest trip, the energy consumption was 12.7 kWh per 100 km and the driving time was 12.8 hours. The average speed was 83.7 km/h (52 mph) and the top speed was 118 km/h (73 mph). Also, the vehicle load was about 200 kg (441 lbs) and the altitude change was 1,875 m. Parameter Value Battery 150 kWh Semi-Solid State Range (max) 1,070 km (665 mi.) Energy Consumption 12.7 kWh per 100 km Average Speed 83.7 km/h (52 mph) Top Speed 118 km/h (73 mph) Altitude Change 1,875 m Driving Time 12.8 hours Details of the Trip Launch Details Nio opened pre-orders for the 2024 Nio ET7 on April 16 and the deliveries are set to commence on April 30. The official launch is slated for April 25. The pricing and specifications will be announced on that very day. You might also like: 91.5% of All Cars Sold in Norway in March 2024 Were Electric Semi-Solid State Battery One of the most intriguing aspects of this 150 kWh semi-solid state battery is that it is the same size as the 100 kWh unit. Moreover, it only weighs 20 kg (44 lbs) more even though it holds 50% more capacity. That makes it extremely efficient and highlights the advantages of semi-solid state batteries. In its construction, it differs from the regular Lithium-ion battery in that it has a solid conductive material suspended in a liquid electrolyte. On the other hand, Li-ion batteries have a liquid or gel-like electrolyte which enables the movements of Lithium ions between the cathode and anode. Hence, these are more prone to leakages and thermal runaways. Since, it is not so in semi-solid state batteries, they are safer. Also, they have higher energy density in the same volume which makes them perfect for applications in confined spaces. They are also better for the environment since they can be made using non-toxic materials. They are lighter than the regular Li-ion batteries which relates to the earlier point about their higher energy density. The solid material used in electrodes forms a porous layer which is able to absorb more active material resulting in higher energy density and improved performance. It allows more efficient ion transportation between the electrodes. All these factors combine to make the semi-solid state batteries lightweight, more efficient and more energy dense. The battery in the 2024 Nio ET7 is a prime example of how we can stretch the potential of an EV battery. Let us keep an eye out for more details in this space.

Electric Car Sales in Norway

91.5% of All Cars Sold in Norway in March 2024 Were Electric

Norway is well on its way to banning the sales of petrol cars by as early as next year! Norway has displayed exemplary practices in embracing electric cars, boosting sales and banning petrol and diesel cars in the next few years. We know that Norway has been ahead of the entire world in terms of EV adoption for a long time now. You would be surprised to know that in March 2024, the BEVs sold in Norway comprise of 91.5% of all new car sales in the country. Out of these, 89.3% were BEVs, 5.7% were hybrids (HEV), and 2.2% were plug-in hybrids (PHEV). Shockingly, there were only 2% cars which had a diesel engine. Intriguingly, the sales of petrol cars were almost negligible. That has to be one of the most unique sales distribution charts you’ll see in this modern world. The Chinese carmakers include the likes of BYD and Xpeng. Apart from that, there are other major car marques including Tesla, Toyota, VW, Hyundai, Nissan, Honda and more. Hence, there are tons of options for the buyers to choose from. This has led to a situation where the country has 700,358 BEVs on the road and 776,003 petrol cars. By the end of this year, it is possible that the total BEVs will outnumber the petrol cars. Additionally, there are a total of 339,724 hybrid cars on Norwegian roads. However, there is still some time for BEVs to overtake diesel cars – 1,068,929. But it is clear that the sales of petrol cars are negligible and are unlikely to grow going foward. Hence, BEVs can overtake petrol car sales by the end of 2025. Let us also take a look at the top 10 BEVs sold in Norway in March 2024. This includes free tolls, free parking, and tax exemptions for EVs while increasing the taxes on ICE cars. Apart from that, the small country has over 5,600 fast chargers throughout its area. Finally, the country produces over 90% of its electricity from hydroelectric power and almost all the rest comes from wind power. Hence, it is not just about EVs and EV infrastructure, but the country completely shifted to renewable sources of energy across the board. With such normalization of electric transportation and green energy generation, no wonder over 91% of all new car sales in the country come from electric powertrains. Image Source

The latter in already on sale in multiple markets across the globe. That provides a fair indication about the kind of specifications we can expect from the Ioniq 7. It will be based on the E-GMP architecture which also underpins the wildly successful Ioniq 5 electric crossover and Ioniq 6 fastback electric sedan. Also, it will bear slightly larger dimensions than the Kia EV9. The Ioniq 7 will offer both single-motor 2WD and dual-motor AWD configurations and two battery pack options. These will likely be 76.1 kWh and 99.8 kWh. These can provide a decent range figures of 230 miles (370 km) to 304 miles (489 km), as per EPA estimates. Using a 350 kW DC fast charger, the EV can recover 10-80% SoC in about 25 minutes. In terms of output, we expect three configurations – a single-motor trim which could generate 215 hp (106 kW), a dual-motor variant good for 379 hp (283 kW) and a performance-focused dual-motor version which could belt out an impressive 576 hp (430 kW) of peak power. These numbers are what you get in the Kia EV9. Sure, we might see a marginal diversion from these numbers, but it won’t be too much. With such offerings, the Korean automaker aims to cater to all sorts of customers. Power controls for the driver’s seat are also visible in one image. There is a central tunnel between the front seats where a bottle of water is securely placed, indicating large space.
